Clue Clarifications — Spoiler-Free
Every question below is answered without revealing a single name, page, or letter of the solution. Read freely.
Does “line” mean a printed row of names, or a sentence?
A row of names on a ledger page. Every full ledger page has 25 lines. Count from the top. Small markers are printed every five lines to help.
What exactly is a “spot”?
The position of a name within its line, counted left to right. Eight names per line: spot 1 is the leftmost, spot 8 the rightmost.
A name appears more than once. Is that an error?
No. Every entry is its own suspect. The same name on a different page, line, or spot is a different person. Judge each entry by where it stands.
Do I have to apply the clues in order?
No. Any order works — the book is balanced so no ordering hands you the killer cheaply. Solvers who start with the name-shape clues (2–10) tend to suffer less.
Clue 3 says “exactly two vowels.” Does Y count?
No. A, E, I, O, U only. Y is a consonant everywhere in this case.
Clue 6 — “no letter appears more than once.” Is that case-sensitive?
No. Treat every letter the same regardless of case. If any letter shows up twice in the name, the suspect fails.
Clue 11 — “even-numbered ledger page.” Book page or ledger page?
LEDGER page — the number printed at the top of the page (LEDGER PAGE 001–120). Book page numbers don't exist in the ledger and never matter.
My checkpoint count is off by one or two. Now what?
Recount before re-crossing. The two usual culprits: a Vera left standing (Clue 1 applies everywhere), or a name crossed for a clue it actually passes. Checkpoint One covers Clues 1–8 on Ledger Page 001 (9 survivors). Checkpoint Two covers Clues 1–12 on Ledger Page 006 (1 survivor).
I found a printing defect (missing letters, repeated page).

Where do I check my answer?
In the book itself — the Verdict Code on the Final Accusation page confirms your killer mathematically. This site offers a second confirmation, plus the Register. The answer in clear text exists nowhere.
